Education Beyond the Classroom
Emily Dimitris
“Blessing the whole family, through serving children and providing opportunities to learn, grow and build relationships is the heart behind Excel Academy.”
Jesus said, “He who welcomes children, welcomes Me.” We welcome children to participate in a variety of programs that benefit them academically, socially, physically and spiritually! Academically, we host Classical Conversations. CC is a classical, Christian homeschool community with a biblical world-view curriculum, designed to foster the love of learning. Over 3/4ths of our Excel Academy families are enrolled in CC. While 4-13 year-olds participate in Classical Conversations, many of the younger siblings attend Pre-grammar, a preschool program where children learn through play! They participate in centers that encourage their imagination, gross and fine motor skills, problem solving and language. The highlight of Pre-grammar is circle time with songs and stories.
The Pre-grammar class is also offered on Thursdays during Arts and Activities. A&A began as a morning program last fall and has grown to the point that we now offer afternoon classes! Students get to choose from a variety of activities that are offered during Arts & Activities. Some develop their muscles in taekwondo, dance or soccer, while others choose to learn something new like guitar or drawing! Chess, science, music and outdoor games are other favorites. Arts and Activities provides homeschool children time to socialize, learn new things, build upon existing skills, and give homeschool moms a break! Many of the moms use this time to attend Ms. Jean’s Bible study (read about it here [LINK MS. JEAN’S BLOG HERE])!
So, what’s next? We are thrilled to have obtained charters for Trail Life and American Heritage Girls, which are Christ-centered scout programs. These troops launch in January with many college students serving as leaders. Our worship gatherings will also be expanding soon to host more families and provide more small group opportunities for children. We look forward to discovering more ways to welcome children and enrich the lives of families through Excel Academy!
